Controversies and Errors to Avoid in Breast Cancer


Course of Errors to avoid in Breast Pathology developed in the context of the Master in Senology and Breast Pathology of the Universidad de Barcelona.





Virtual & in Live

The course takes place at the Universidad de Barcelona. It is aimed at specialists who already have experience in Breast Pathology. It is linked to the second year of the Master in Senology from the same university and is offered virtually.


The objectives of the course are:


  • To study different clinical situations that occur in daily practice, identifying, through a methodology based on updating the topic, the errors that may be made, implementing the different mechanisms that allow them to be avoided and, consequently, to improve the quality of care.
  • Analysis of the topics that generate a special controversy in the fields of diagnosis or treatment.

The course consists of a total of 10 ECTS credits (1ECST = 25 teaching hours).


Sessions 4 & 5

Graduated in Medicine from the Universitat de Barcelona in 2004, she completed a specialty in Medical Oncology at the Hospital Clínico Universitario Lozano Blesa in Zaragoza between 2005 and 2009. After completing the residency period, she joined the Breast Cancer and Melanoma Unit at the Hospital Universitario Vall d’Hebron where she did both clinical and research practice as part of the Translational Genomics group led by Dr. Prat, where she developed her doctoral thesis entitled "Molecular characterization of fibroepithelial tumors of the mammary gland". In 2016 she joined the Breast Cancer Unit of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona where she exercises her clinical practice focused on the treatment of patients with breast cancer, where she actively participates in the inclusion of patients in clinical trials, being a Principal Investigator in 14 of them and co-researcher in more than 60. She is part of the Translational Genomics and Targeted Therapies in Solid Tumors group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) led by Dr. Prat. Since 2019 she is an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine, at the Universitat de Barcelona, coordinating the course of Medical Oncology together with Dr. Prat.

Benigno Acea Nebril currently works at the Breast Unit, Complexo Hospitalario Universitario A Coruña (Spain). Graduated in medicine 1988 and specialized in General Surgery 1995. Philosophy Doctor degree 1998. Director of Advanced Course of Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery at Spain and Latin America since 2006. Founder of website and the application Oncoplastic. Benigno does research in Oncoplastic Surgery, Oncology and Surgery. Their current project is 'Quality of life in women with breast cancer surgery.'

Senologist and breast surgeon. Expert in oncoplastic and reconstructive surgery of the breast. European Board of Surgery Qualification in Breast Surgery surgeon of the Breast Pathology Unit at the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo and Coordinator of the Breast Unit of the Hospital Vithas-Fátima de Vigo.

Miquel Luna

Session 1

Dr. Saura Saura is Head of the Breast Cancer Unit of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Hospital Universitario Vall d’Hebron, is Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator in multiple clinical trials in the field of breast cancer. She is involved in the development of different international studies with drugs directed against molecular targets in breast cancer. She has a special interest in precision medicine and a prominent position in the development of different PI3K inhibitors and anti-HER2 treatment. She is the author of several publications, as well as communications in different national and international conferences.

Manel Algara

Session 3

Specialist in Medical Oncology since 1984. PhD from the UAB in 1987. Former coordinator of the Functional Unit of Breast Pathology at Hospital del Mar (Barcelona) Head of Section (Section of Breast Cancer and Gynecological Cancer) of the Medical Oncology Service of Hospital del Mar. Associate Professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Edelmiro Iglesias Martínez

Master in Breast Pathology and Breast Cancer co-director.

Specialist in General Surgery and expert in breast pathology. In addition to teaching, he is Co-director of the Master's Degree in Breast Pathology and Breast Cancer at the Universidad de Barcelona and Director of the University Specialist Course in Senology for Nurses at the Universidad de Lleida. He is the author of more than 100 articles and communications in scientific journals and conferences. He is also a member of various medical societies, including the coordinator of the Accreditation Committee of the Unidad de Mama de la Sociedad Española de Senología y Patología Mamaria (SESPM) and Vice President of this same society.

Dr. Miguel Prats de Puig

Master in Breast Pathology and Breast Cancer co-director.

Renowned gynecologist specialist with extensive experience in senology- breast pathology. He has completed training stays in highly prestigious breast pathology units, both nationally and internationally. He has extensive surgical training in benign and malignant processes of the breast, including techniques as selective biopsy of the sentinel lymph node and intraoperative breast ultrasound. He is a pioneer and a reference in Spain in breast surgery with intraoperative radiation therapy. In addition to clinical practice, he also teaches at different universities and is the author of various chapters in books on breast pathology. Furthermore, he is a member of the main medical societies of his specialty at an international level.
